A super shield digs the express line to connect Pudong and Hongqiao airports in Shanghai.
Construction of the largest station of an express line linking Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports has begun.
Sanlin South Station in Pudong New Area is being built about 42 meters underground, to be one of the deepest subway stations in the city when completed.
Covering more than 20,000 square meters, the station will have four underground levels serving two rails of the Airport Express Line and a branch connecting to Shanghai South Railway Station, the construction company said on Friday.
According to long-term planning, two other subway lines, Line 19 and Fengxian Line, will also be interchanged at the station.
Excavators dig the 700 meter long construction site for the mega metro station. Noise and dust are strictly controlled to avoid affecting the nearby Sanlin campus of the high school attached to Shanghai Normal University.
Nine shields are currently digging through the city for the construction of the express line. Three more shields will join the project early this year.
The 68.6 kilometer express line is expected to reduce travel time between the two airports to less than 40 minutes from the current 90 minutes when completed in 2024. The line will have nine stations in Xuhui and Minhang districts as well as in Pudong New Area. Its three main parts will be Puxi, Pudong and the cross sections.
It will pass through Hongqiao Transportation Hub, Qibao Ancient Town, Huajing Town, Sanlin Town, Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park, Shanghai International Complex, Pudong International Airport and its new terminal. scheduled, and Shanghai East Railway Station.
Currently, passengers can take metro line 2 or a shuttle bus between the two airports. It takes between 70 and 90 minutes, depending on whether or not commuters use the maglev in addition to the metro.
As one of the first batches of 11 urban demonstration railways in the country approved by the Development and Reform Commission, the country’s main planning body, the express line will be able to connect to the system in the future. national railway and the Yangtze River intercity transport network. Delta region.
The express line will not only benefit passengers transiting through the two airports, but also make it easier for citizens to move around the city. It will further improve the essential and service functions of the two airports in the Yangtze River Delta region, according to the city government.
The line will also improve the city’s business environment, strengthen Shanghai’s core competencies and support the national integrated development strategy of the Yangtze River Delta region.
The planned speed of the line will be 160 kilometers per hour. Approximately 88% of the project will take place underground. Above ground, travel will be on elevated rails.
