Tyler Adams transfer: Potential reunion with Jesse Marsch as Leeds look to replace Kalvin Phillips

After falling out of favor under new manager Domenico Tedesco towards the end of the season, American midfielder Tyler Adams could move to the Premier League. Adams didn’t start of RB Leipzig most important games of the season, including the DFP Pokal final and the Europa League semi-finals, showing a lack of self-confidence from Tedesco. Although the movements should be carefully considered by Adams because of its importance to the United States the men’s national team at the next World Cup, he’s a coveted player who could find more regular minutes elsewhere.

Leeds United and Everton would have the most concrete interest in the midfielder. Everton need depth everywhere as Leeds look to replace Kalvin Phillips as he goes to Manchester City. RB Leipzig awaits between 12 and 15 million euros for Adamsaccording BILD. This brings the move into an affordable range for cash-strapped Everton. It also gives Leeds a chance to make a handsome profit on the sale of Phillips while securing a young asset to the team as Adams is only 23.

Leeds United should soon to submit a formal offer of 15 million eurosaccording to Sky Sports Germany. It’s unclear if Everton would match that, but it’s a move that could heat up quickly for the versatile midfielder. CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs reports that Adams at Leeds is progressing and there has even been talk of a loan-to-buy option, with a permanent deal also discussed.

As well as being able to be deployed as a central or defensive midfielder, Adams has the advantage of being strong enough defensively to play as a right-back in a pinch, like Stuart Dallas. He played in the USMNT position.

Adams would also be the third signing Marsch has coached in the past, joining his fellow American Brenden Aaronson in the same way Rasmus Kristensen. If the decision is up to Adams, it will probably be an easy choice to move to Leeds United instead of Everton.

Here’s what you need to know:

Another meeting with Marsch

Adams could reunite with his former coach Jesse March, who not only oversaw his development in Major League Soccer with New York red bulls, but also spent a brief stint coaching Adams at RB Leipzig last season before being fired in December. On the pitch, Adams has a limited passing range, opting to play safer passes than pushing possession forward, but he’s a great shield for a back line and could understandably be the man to try and replace. Phillips.

Being able to work with a manager who not only knows what he can do – but more importantly, what he can’t do – is essential to Adams’ success if he were to move up to the Premier League. With Leeds already adding Kristensen from RB Leipzig at right-back, a move for Adams could see Stuart Dallas return to left-back, where Junior Firpo struggled last season.

Passing by Phillips

Without Phillips, Leeds United have a unique challenge as a player cannot replace what they have done in midfield. Phillips not only covered a ton of ground in midfield but was also able to launch attacks on his own with precise passing. The closest Premier League comparison is Declan Rice from West Ham, which is beyond the reach of what Leeds can afford, with bigger clubs interested in him. This caused Marsch and the board to get creative in reconfiguring the midfield.

Marc Roca has already been added from Bayern Munich, and Adams would join him to create the defensive shield. In front of them, it looks like Marsch is aiming for a switch to a 4-2-2-2 as Raphinha is likely to leave for Barcelona Where chelsea this summer. Aaronson, Mateusz KlichDarko Gaybi, Daniel James, Jack Harrisonand Rodrigo can all play in midfield, supporting the forwards. A change like this will not only help Leeds maintain pressing cues and retain their form better, but it will also allow their other four forward spaces to be fluid in transition.

Another area where it helps is depth. Leeds were an injury-hit side last season because the press demands so much of the whole squad. Not only can Marsch change large parts of the squad as the Premier League will have five substitutes, but he will have more room to rotate, keeping his players fresh.

The United States of England

Leeds are fast becoming a destination for players who have come through Major League Soccer and it’s not just because of Marsch. Jack Harrison was drafted by the Chicago Fire and traded to New York FC in 2016. He also played college at Wake Forest. After taking the league by storm, scoring 14 goals and assisting ten others in 55 starts, Harrison moved to Manchester City in January 2018. While Harrison was not expected to rise to prominence at City, the he team with incredible depth and no room for him, Championship loans helped Harrison find a home with Leeds United.

With Aaronson starting his career with Philadelphia union and Adams starting with New York Red Bulls, Leeds could have three starters next season who started their careers in MLS. It’s quite a trajectory like Michael Almiron carried the MLS banner in the Premier League, and it’s time to recognize the growth of MLS as a league, a league that can produce talent for the rest of the world.

On top of all that, the San Francisco 49ers ownership group, 49ers Enterprises, owns part of the club.
